Important Decisions From Kenyan High Court About Late Arshad Sharif

arshad sharif death report kenya high court

A Kenyan court has ordered to pay 100 million Kenyan shillings (about 78,000 US dollars) to the widow of the well-known Pakistani journalist Arshad Sharif, who was shot dead by police officers. However, after this decision, the question remains that what will happen now and whether this decision will be implemented or not

It should be remembered that in October 2022, Arshad Sharif was killed in a shooting incident near Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, and according to the initial report of the local police, the police officers shot at the vehicle in which Arshad Sharif was riding due to a misunderstanding of identity

However, now the Kajiado High Court in Kenya has termed the firing of the police officers as 'deliberate, unnecessary and illegal'. The court ordered both the Public Prosecution and the Policing Oversight Authority to complete the investigation into Arshad Sharif's death and punish the policemen if found guilty

There has been no response to the decision from the Kenyan police, government lawyers or the Policing Oversight Authority

Jawaria Siddique, the widow of petitioner Arshad Sharif in this case, says that she will contact international forums including the United Nations to get justice. The Kenya Union of Journalists and another Kenyan journalist organization were also petitioners in the case, whose lawyer said the decision is "as important for Pakistanis as for Kenyans who have been victims of police violence
